In the Huger games book the story is being narrated by Katniss Everdeen who lives in District 12. District 12 is a coal mining district which is the poorest and least populated. Katniss lives with her family in a little cabin. Her mother Mrs. Everdeen and her younger sister Primrose Everdeen. The hook at the beginning of the story make you start questioning right away what is the reaping (line 3-4) " she must have had bad dreams and climbed in with our mother. Of course, she did.This is the day of the reaping". Through the first and second chapter of the hunger games it gives the lay of the land on how life is for Katniss in district 12 and what she has to do just to support her family and to keep food on the table. Also it answers the lingering question on what the reaping is and why it seems like a horrible day for everyone at the districts. In the third chapter it shows you why the reaping really affects families as they see katniss basically give up her own life for her younger sister. And it something that never happens but this is just showing how cruel the hunger games actually is and it shows it seems like for the capitol.

In the Hunger Games there are many themes throughout the book, but one that really stands out in the theme of friendship and the rebellion of the cruel, unjustful treatment and overall the oppression of the capitol twords the districts. The symbol used to show this theme is the mocking jay the mocking jay shows defiance in the the story, the mocking jay's symbolism is coming from its origins. the mocking jay came about from a failed project and every time we see it its just a hit to the face to the capitol as they are reminded of their failure. The mocking jay pin Madge gives to katniss shows an emblem of resistance. When katniss see mockingbirds later in the story, they remind her of Rue and that memory stirs her hatred of the capitol and her wish to rebel, and take revenge against it.
